Terms and Conditions

Last updated: April 11, 2026

The short version

Verified students only.

You need a valid .edu.au email to submit reviews. No passwords, no persistent accounts — just a one-time code.

Your reviews, your words.

You own what you write, but by posting it you give us a licence to display it. Keep it honest and don't put words in anyone's mouth.

We can remove content or access.

Fake reviews, harassment, or impersonation will get your email blocked and content removed. We make that call at our discretion.

Australian law governs everything.

These terms are governed by the laws of Australia. If something's unclear, email [email protected].

CheckUnit is a platform where verified Australian university students can read and submit anonymous reviews of their units. These Terms govern your use of the site. By using CheckUnit, you agree to them. If you don't, please don't use the Service.

Interpretation and Definitions

Interpretation

Capitalised terms have specific meanings defined below. Those meanings apply whether the term appears in singular or plural form.

Definitions

For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions:

  • Country refers to Australia.
  • Company (referred to as either "the Company", "We", "Us" or "Our" in these Terms and Conditions) refers to CheckUnit, [email protected].
  • Device means any device that can access the Service such as a computer, a mobile phone or a digital tablet.
  • Service refers to the Website.
  • Terms and Conditions (also referred to as "Terms") means these Terms and Conditions, including any documents expressly incorporated by reference, which govern Your access to and use of the Service and form the entire agreement between You and the Company regarding the Service.
  • Website refers to CheckUnit, accessible from https://checkunit.au.
  • You means the individual accessing or using the Service, or the company, or other legal entity on behalf of which such individual is accessing or using the Service, as applicable.

Acknowledgment

By accessing or using CheckUnit, you agree to these Terms. They apply to all visitors and users of the Service. You must be 18 or older to use CheckUnit.

Your use of the Service is also subject to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data. The two documents should be read together.

Identity Verification

To submit reviews on the Service, You must verify Your identity using a valid university email address (.edu.au). Verification is completed via a one-time code sent to Your email address. The Service does not require You to create a persistent account, set a password, or choose a username.

You agree to provide a valid and accurate university email address for verification. Using someone else's email address or otherwise misrepresenting Your identity constitutes a breach of these Terms.

User-Generated Content

Our Service allows You to submit reviews, ratings, and other content ("User Content"). You retain ownership of Your User Content, but by submitting it, You grant Us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable licence to use, display, reproduce, modify, and distribute Your User Content in connection with the Service, subject to any deletion request processed under Our Privacy Policy.

You are solely responsible for Your User Content. By submitting User Content, You represent and warrant that:

  • The content is Your own original work or You have the right to submit it.
  • The content does not infringe any third party's intellectual property or other rights.
  • The content is not defamatory, abusive, threatening, harassing, or otherwise objectionable.
  • The content does not dox, personally attack, or maliciously target specific university staff members, tutors, or students. Reviews must address the unit — its curriculum, workload, and teaching quality — not the personal lives or identities of individuals.
  • The content does not contain false or misleading information intended to deceive other users.
  • The content complies with all applicable laws and regulations.

We reserve the right, but are not obligated, to review, edit, or remove any User Content at Our sole discretion, for any reason, without notice. We may remove content that We believe violates these Terms, is harmful, or is otherwise objectionable.

Reviews are displayed anonymously. We verify user identity via university email addresses (.edu.au) but do not publicly associate Your identity with Your reviews.

Intellectual Property

The Service and its original content (excluding User Content), features, and functionality are and will remain the exclusive property of the Company. The Service is protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws of Australia. Our trademarks, trade names, logos, and visual design may not be used in connection with any product or service without the prior written consent of the Company.

Feedback

If You provide Us with any feedback, suggestions, or ideas regarding the Service ("Feedback"), You agree that We may freely use, implement, modify, and incorporate such Feedback without any obligation to compensate You or give You credit.

Links to Other Websites

CheckUnit may link to external sites — university handbooks, faculty pages, and similar resources. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content or practices. Check their terms before relying on anything they say.

Restriction of Access

We may revoke Your ability to submit reviews by restricting Your verified email address, immediately and without prior notice or liability, for any reason whatsoever, including without limitation if You breach these Terms and Conditions.

Once restricted, Your email address will no longer be accepted for verification and You will be unable to submit new content through the Service. We may also remove any User Content You have previously submitted at Our sole discretion.

Limitation of Liability

Notwithstanding any damages that You might incur, the entire liability of the Company and any of its suppliers under any provision of these Terms and Your exclusive remedy for all of the foregoing shall be limited to 100 AUD.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the Company or its suppliers be liable for any special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including, but not limited to, damages for loss of profits, loss of data or other information, for business interruption, for personal injury, loss of privacy arising out of or in any way related to the use of or inability to use the Service, third-party software and/or third-party hardware used with the Service, or otherwise in connection with any provision of these Terms), even if the Company or any supplier has been advised of the possibility of such damages and even if the remedy fails of its essential purpose.

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts, or modifies any consumer guarantee, right or remedy conferred on You by the Australian Consumer Law (Schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth)) or any other applicable law that cannot be excluded, restricted, or modified by agreement.

"AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" Disclaimer

CheckUnit is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any particular review is accurate. The content you read was written by other students — treat it as one data point, not gospel.

Nothing in this disclaimer excludes, restricts, or modifies any consumer guarantee, right or remedy conferred on You by the Australian Consumer Law (Schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth)) or any other applicable law that cannot be excluded, restricted, or modified by agreement.

Governing Law

The laws of Australia, excluding its conflicts of law rules, shall govern these Terms and Your use of the Service. Your use of the Service may also be subject to other local, state, national, or international laws.

Disputes Resolution

If something goes wrong, email us first at [email protected]. We're a small team and we'd rather sort things out directly than escalate.

Severability and Waiver

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, it will be adjusted to the minimum extent necessary. The rest of the Terms remain in full effect.

Waiver

If we don't enforce a particular provision at a given time, that doesn't mean we've waived the right to enforce it later.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. For material changes we'll post a notice on the site at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use of CheckUnit after that point means you accept the revised Terms.
